THE ODIE FUND:
The
Odie Fund was started in 2008 in memory of Olman "Odie" Sanabria to
help his family with out of pocket expenses and bills that were not
covered by their insurance company after a long illness and the
eventual passing of "Odie."
Odie, in addtition to being a local soccer coach, was a man that touched the lives of countless people in our community and was a generous friend to everyone that he met. After his passing, the family was tens of thousands of dollars in debt. Without the generosity of all the people that Odie touched and Ben and Bonnie Krupinski who gave us the use of East Hampton Point for the fund raiser, the future for the Sanabria family was uncertain. The Clamshell Foundation became involved at the request of Thom Lawrence with The Lion's Club and Claudia Pilato with Bridgehampton National Bank. We raised over $20,000 the night of the event and eventually that number grew to $46,000 helping the Sanabria's get back on their feet. The Sanabria family, his wife Alisa, his son Jonathan, and his daughters Gabriella and Julia (Julz) have since started the Olman Sanabria Humanitarian Award. This award is given to graduating high school seniors who display outstanding values in helping their neighbors and their community. That award fund continues to this day and 7 grants of $500 each have been awarded thus far. The Odie Fund will continue to strive to help support other future families in our area who may find themselves in similar situations and simply need a hand-up.
